Electoral politics ... and fairies? Why not? Regarded by many as Gilbert and Sullivan's finest and most perfect collaboration, Iolanthe, drops England's House of Peers - Lord Chancellor included - into the middle of a Hans Christian Anderson-inspired forest enchanted by fairies and ruled by a no-nonsense Fairy Queen. When Strephon, son of the beloved eponymous fairy Iolanthe, is spurned in his affections for his shepherdess love Phyllis by the Lord Chancellor and his House of Peers, the fairies take their revenge - by sending Strephon into Parliament as a Fairy Member!

Featuring Gilbert and Sullivan at the height of their creative powers, both the libretto and score are somehow just as infectious and relevant today as when originally conceived nearly 140 years ago. Highlighted by the most difficult patter song in the canon and a glorious featured male ensemble, Iolanthe has long been revered in the United Kingdom as on par with The Mikado as one of the best and most popular works of operetta ever produced by the Savoy.

Read the Department of Music's Press Release for more information about the upcoming production.
